Guenther will count just over $7.14 million annually against the salary cap over the term of the contract that runs through the 2032-33 NHL season. The 21-year-old is one of the youngest building blocks for the team that was known until earlier this year as the Arizona Coyotes and is now based in Salt Lake City.

“Dylan is elite in every aspect on and off the ice,” Utah general manager Bill Armstrong said. “He is a young, highly skilled forward with a shot that’s evolving into one of the best in the NHL. He’s also a first-class person with a strong determination to be great. We look forward to having Dylan as a core player for this organization for many years to come.”

Guenther split last season between Arizona and the American Hockey League’s Tucson Roadrunners. He had 18 goals and 17 assists for 35 points in 45 NHL games with the Coyotes.

“There isn’t a better example than Dylan when we talk about the combination of talent and character that we are so excited to build a new franchise with here in Utah,” president of hockey operations Chris Armstrong said. “Today is another exciting day for our organization and our fans who will come to love Dylan, not just as a hockey player but as a member of our community.”

Guenther, an Edmonton, Alberta, native, who also played his junior hockey there, was the ninth pick in the 2021 draft. He has 50 points in 78 career games since breaking into the league.

“This is a very happy day for me and my family,” Guenther said. “Everything about this organization is on the right track, and I know we have an opportunity to do some special things here for a long time. Utah is where I want to be, and I’m proud to commit to my teammates and the organization long term.”

Guenther is now signed longer than any other player in the organization, surpassing defenseman Mikhail Sergachev, who was acquired in an offseason trade from Tampa Bay and is under contract through 2031. Forward Clayton Keller and defenseman Sean Durzi are each signed through 2028.

Storm hit 12 threes, beat Mercury in blowout fashion https://arizonasports.com/story/3557383/storm-beat-mercury-blowout/ https://arizonasports.com/story/3557383/storm-beat-mercury-blowout/#respond Sun, 08 Sep 2024 03:50:11 +0000 https://arizonasports.com/?p=3557383 SEATTLE (AP) — Jewell Loyd scored 20 points, Jordan Horston added 16 on 7-of-8 shooting and Skylar Diggins-Smith had a double-double to help the Seattle Storm beat the Phoenix Mercury 90-66 Saturday night.

Diggins-Smith finished with 12 points and 11 assists and Nneka Ogwumike scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Seattle (21-14). The Storm are 1 1/2 games behind Las Vegas for the No. 4 seed. Phoenix is 1 1/2 games behind Indiana for the sixth seed.

Horston made a hook shot that gave the Storm the lead for good with almost 8 minutes left in the second quarter and sparked a 17-4 run. Horston scored seven more points while Diggins-Smith and Sami Whitcomb each hit a 3-pointer in the spurt that pushed Seattle’s lead to 36-23 with 3:17 left in the first half.

Horston, who scored in double figures for the first time since prior to the monthlong break for the Paris Olympics, poured in 11 points as Seattle outscored the Mercury 28-13 in the second quarter to take a 15-point lead into halftime.

Diana Taurasi led Phoenix (17-19) with 18 points. Kahleah Copper added 11 points on 4-of-16 shooting.

Seattle hit 12 3-pointers — including three apiece by Whitcomb, Diggins-Smith and Loyd — and committed just six turnovers.

Bills’ Damar Hamlin to start season opener vs. Cardinals https://arizonasports.com/story/3556945/bills-safety-damar-hamlin-start/ https://arizonasports.com/story/3556945/bills-safety-damar-hamlin-start/#respond Wed, 04 Sep 2024 18:21:04 +0000 https://arizonasports.com/?p=3556945 ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — A year after making the cut to successfully resume his football career following a near-death experience, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin reached a new plateau in his comeback in being selected a season-opening starter on Wednesday.

Coach Sean McDermott announced the news by saying Hamlin will be paired with Taylor Rapp when the Bills take the field in hosting the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

“What else can’t this young man do?” McDermott said, proudly.

“It’s one thing to come back off of an ACL or a broken bone. It’s another thing to come back off of what he came back off of, right, let alone just decide to play contact football. … I mean, it’s incredible,” he added. “We’re just extremely proud and full of gratitude to watch him go through what he’s went through and where he is now.”

The fourth-year player was hardly assured of winning a starting job, even with both spots being open after Buffalo released Jordan Poyer in March and with Micah Hyde still unsigned and contemplating retirement. The Bills signed fifth-year player Mike Edwards in free agency and then used a second-round pick to draft Cole Bishop.

Edwards and Bishop, however, have missed significant time because of injuries, and McDermott credited Hamlin for showing consistency and building an on-field rapport with Rapp.

The promotion for the 26-year-old Hamlin comes some 20 months since he went into cardiac arrest, after making what appeared to be a routine tackle, and needed to be resuscitated on the field during a game at Cincinnati. He then spent two days in the hospital in a medically induced coma before finally being awakened while surrounded by his family.

Doctors diagnosed the cause of Hamlin’s heart stopping as a result of commotio cordis, which happens when a direct blow at a specific point in a heartbeat causes cardiac arrest. Cleared for practice and assured by specialists the chances of a recurrence being slim, Hamlin was gradually eased back into football.

He was limited to appearing in just five games in a backup and special teams role last season. In 2022, Hamlin enjoyed his most playing time in starting 13 games in place of Hyde, who was sidelined by a neck injury.

After experiencing trepidation during his comeback last year, Hamlin acknowledged he was able to focus more on football this year.

“My mind is free. My spirit is free. My soul is free,” Hamlin told The Associated Press last month. “I’m able to think clearly. I’m not hindered by second thoughts of what could maybe happen again.”

Hamlin is from the Pittsburgh area and was selected by Buffalo in the sixth round of the 2021 draft out of Pitt.

A’ja Wilson’s 41 points too much for Mercury in loss to Aces https://arizonasports.com/story/3556630/mercury-aces-aja-wilson/ https://arizonasports.com/story/3556630/mercury-aces-aja-wilson/#respond Sun, 01 Sep 2024 23:14:46 +0000 https://arizonasports.com/?p=3556630 PHOENIX (AP) — A’ja Wilson scored 41 points on 16-of-23 shooting and grabbed 17 rebounds, Jackie Young added 11 points and a career-best 14 assists, and the Las Vegas Aces beat the Phoenix Mercury 97-79 on Sunday.

Wilson, who scored a season-high 42 points in a 93-90 loss to Dallas on Tuesday, exceeded 40 points for the second time in three games.

Brittney Griner led Phoenix (16-17) with 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting. Sophie Cunningham made 4-of-6 from 3-point range and finished with 16 points, and Kahleah Copper scored 15.

Kelsey Plum finished with 16 points and five assists and Tiffany Hayes scored 11 points for the Aces (20-12), who have won back-to-back games for the first time since winning four straight from July 7-14.

Las Vegas shot 56% (37-of-66) from the field, hit 11 3-pointers and finished with 32 assists.

The Mercury missed their first six field-goal attempts and committed three turnovers as Las Vegas jumped to an 11-2 lead when Young hit a 3-pointer with 5:25 left in the first quarter. Griner sandwiched back-to-back baskets in the paint around a 3-pointer by Plum before Wilson scored six consecutive points to make it 20-6 with three minutes to go and the Aces led by double figures the rest of the way.

Phoenix committed six turnovers, shot just 4 of 15 from the field and was outscored 15-10 in the first quarter by Wilson alone as the Aces took a 19-point lead into the second period.

Former Arizona State WR Brandon Aiyuk reportedly agrees to extension, ending dispute with 49ers https://arizonasports.com/story/3556293/brandon-aiyuk-contract-dispute/ https://arizonasports.com/story/3556293/brandon-aiyuk-contract-dispute/#respond Fri, 30 Aug 2024 02:05:21 +0000 https://arizonasports.com/?p=3556293 SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Brandon Aiyuk’s long contract dispute with San Francisco came to an end Thursday when the star receiver agreed on a four-year, $120 million contract extension to stay with the 49ers.

Two people familiar with the deal says the sides came to the agreement Thursday after the former Arizona State wide receiver missed his second straight practice despite being cleared by team doctors to participate. They spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal hadn’t been announced.

The former Sun Devil will get $76 million in guarantees, according to one of the people.

NFL Network first reported the agreement.

Aiyuk had refused to practice all offseason as part of a contract “hold in” with the team, saying he had a back injury. Coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch said he was cleared by doctors before Wednesday’s practice but Aiyuk still didn’t join, risking possible fines.

Aiyuk had requested a trade earlier in the summer but no team that Aiyuk wanted to go to was willing to give the Niners what they wanted and pay Aiyuk the salary he sought.

But that was all settled when Aiyuk and the 49ers came to an agreement 11 days before the season opener against the New York Jets on Sept. 9.

That leaves San Francisco with one remaining prominent hold out with All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams still staying away from the team as he seeks a new deal.

Aiyuk had been set to play on the fifth-year option worth about $14.1 million this season but now becomes the latest receiver to cash in with a long-term deal.

Eleven receivers before Aiyuk had signed contracts worth at least $70 million already this offseason, with Justin Jefferson’s four-year, $140 million extension with Minnesota setting the top of the market. Aiyuk is the sixth receiver with an average annual contract of at least $30 million.

Aiyuk had been a key part of San Francisco’s offense last season as he formed a great connection with quarterback Brock Purdy. Aiyuk had 75 catches and a career-high 1,375 yards last season with seven touchdowns as he earned second-team All-Pro honors.

He put up those numbers on an offense that passed at the second-lowest rate in the NFL last season and had several other star playmakers such as Deebo Samuel, George Kittle and All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey.

Aiyuk’s 12.8 average yards receiving per target were the highest mark for any player with at least 75 targets in a season since Jordy Nelson averaged 13.2 for Green Bay in 2011.

Purdy’s 120.5 passer rating when targeting Aiyuk ranks the best of any QB-pass catcher combination with at least 125 attempts over the past two seasons, according to Sportradar.

Aiyuk has 269 catches for 3,931 yards and 25 TDs in four seasons since being drafted 25th overall in 2020 but has taken off since Purdy became quarterback, with eight of his 11 100-yard receiving games in his career coming with Purdy as starter.

The Niners have done a good job rewarding their homegrown stars, handing out megadeals to Kittle, Fred Warner, Samuel, Nick Bosa and now Aiyuk since 2020.

But the past two proved particularly tough with Bosa not signing his deal until a few days before the opener last season.

Sabrina Ionescu scored five points as the Liberty, starting with Stewart’s turnaround jumper from the foul line, turned a 64-57 lead into a 17-point advantage midway through the fourth quarter. Leonie Fiebich contributed a 3-pointer, her only basket of the game.

Jonquel Jones scored 15 points for the Liberty (27-5), who hit 12 3-pointers and outscored Phoenix 14-3 at the foul line. Ionescu finished with 13 points.

Brittney Griner scored 22 to lead the Mercury (16-15), but had seven of their 20 turnovers. Natasha Cloud added 18 points, Kahleah Copper had 14 and Diana Taurasi 10. The turnovers cost Phenix 28 points and the bench was outscored 15-4.

New York was 12 for 29 behind the arc to Phoenix’s 5 for 22.

Taurasi hit a 3-pointer in the closing seconds to pull the Mercury into a tie at 38 at the break. The Liberty led by as many as nine but was outscored 20-12 inside and Phoenix had 15 fastbreak points.

Griner reached 800 career blocks for the Mercury and Cloud reached 200 assists for the season, passing Taurasi for the single-season franchise record. Taurasi also moved past Lindsey Whalen (2,348) for fourth on the WBA career assists list.

Gurriel’s four RBIs power Diamondbacks past Marlins https://arizonasports.com/story/3555451/gurriel-drives-in-four-runs-leads-diamondbacks-to-win-over-marlins/ https://arizonasports.com/story/3555451/gurriel-drives-in-four-runs-leads-diamondbacks-to-win-over-marlins/#respond Thu, 22 Aug 2024 02:37:02 +0000 https://arizonasports.com/?p=3555451 MIAMI (AP) — Lourdes Gurriel Jr. drove in four runs, including a go-ahead, pinch-hit three-run double in the seventh inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied to beat the Miami Marlins 10-8 on Wednesday night.

Jake McCarthy and Geraldo Perdomo homered for the Diamondbacks, who swept the three-game series and are a major league best 31-13 since July 1.

Down 6-3, Arizona scored four against relievers Jesús Tinoco and Andrew Nardi (3-2). Josh Bell’s RBI single made it 6-4 before Gurriel cleared the bases with a drive to the wall in center field.

Perdomo’s solo blast in the eighth increased the lead. Jose Herrera then hit a run-scoring triple in the ninth and scored on Gurriel’s RBI single.

Dylan Floro (5-3) got the last out in the sixth for the win and Kevin Ginkel followed with a perfect seventh. Joe Mantiply allowed Vidal Brujan’s one-out RBI double in the eighth to get Miami to 8-7.

Justin Martinez relieved Mantiply and struck out Xavier Edwards and retired Jake Burger on a groundout to end the inning.

Miami loaded the bases against Martinez in the ninth after Jesús Sánchez hit a leadoff double, Derek Hill singled and Otto López walked. Sánchez scored on a wild pitch before Martinez struck out Kyle Stowers and David Hensley for his fifth save.

Marlins manager Skip Schumaker was ejected by plate umpire Gabe Morales after he argued the called third strike on Edwards in the eighth.

Burger hit his 25th homer and 15th since the All-Star break for the Marlins, who have lost six of seven and dropped to an NL-worst 46-81.

The Marlins erased a 3-2 deficit with a four-run fourth against Diamondbacks starter Jordan Montgomery. López hit a tying RBI double and scored on Cristian Pache’s two-run blast. Edwards added an RBI triple.

Montgomery gave up six runs and 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out four.

McCarthy connected off Marlins starter Roddery Muñoz with a two-run shot in the third that gave Arizona the lead.

Muñoz was lifted after allowing three runs and five hits in 3 1/3 innings. The right-hander walked three and struck out three.

Burger’s two-run blast in the first put the Marlins ahead 2-1. He drove Montgomery’s first pitch over the wall in left-center for Miami’s first lead of the series.

The Diamondbacks got on the board when Pavin Smith hit a sacrifice fly to deep center in the first.

Brittney Griner added 18 points. Monique Billings, who signed a seven-day contract with Phoenix (15-13) earlier in the day, made 5-of-7 from the field and finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and two steals in 23 minutes.

Taurasi, on the fastbreak, hit a pull-up 3-pointer from behind the hash mark to make it 7-4 and the Mercury led the rest of the way. The six-time Olympic gold medalist hit three free throws to spark an 11-3 run that pushed the margin to 22-11 when Griner made a short jumper 6 minutes into the game. Taurasi hit a jumper to close the first quarter and make it 32-19.

Angel Reese scored 19 points and grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds for Chicago (11-16). The No. 7 draft pick has grabbed double-digit rebounds in 20 consecutive games. After just 27 games, she is the fastest in league history to record 20 double-doubles, including each of the last four games. She also had 12 points and 11 rebounds in the WNBA All-Star Game.

Chennedy Carter added 16 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Sky. Kamilla Cardoso and Isabelle Harrison scored 12 points apiece.

Chicago shot 35.9% (28 of 78) from the field, went 0-for-14 from 3-point range and made just 12-of-21 from the free-throw line.

Phoenix won the first two games of the season series with the Sky — one game remains next month. Kahleah Copper scored 29 points as the Mercury beat Chicago 85-65 on Thursday, when the regular season resumed after a monthlong pause for the Paris Olympics.

Mercury’s Brittney Griner lets tears flow during national anthem after US women win gold https://arizonasports.com/story/3554496/mercurys-brittney-griner-lets-tears-flow-during-national-anthem-after-us-women-win-gold/ https://arizonasports.com/story/3554496/mercurys-brittney-griner-lets-tears-flow-during-national-anthem-after-us-women-win-gold/#respond Sun, 11 Aug 2024 20:16:13 +0000 https://arizonasports.com/?p=3554496 PARIS (AP) — Standing on the medal stand with her third gold medal draped around her neck, Brittney Griner looked at the U.S. flag with tears streaming down her cheeks during the national anthem.

She didn’t wipe them away until after the anthem ended, never trying to hide how she feels representing her country 612 days after the U.S. got the American star home after 10 months in a Russian prison.

Not with all that this moment meant.

The Phoenix Mercury star didn’t think she’d have this chance again.

“This one meant a lot to me,” Griner said after the U.S. held off France 67-66 to win an unprecedented eighth straight gold medal in women’s basketball Sunday. “I mean, just having a chance to play for gold, represent my country, what my country did for me? Yeah, this is the highest on the pinnacle right here.”

This gold medal victory capped a long road back for Griner, who was sitting in a Russian penal colony two years ago not sure if she would ever get home again, let alone play basketball or compete in a third Olympics being held in Europe so close to Russia.

She had been sentenced to nine years behind bars for drug possession and smuggling in Russia, spending 10 months in jail before she was part of a high-profile prisoner exchange in December 2022. Griner, a Phoenix Mercury center who had been playing basketball in Russia during the WNBA offseason when she was detained, said she would never play internationally again except with USA Basketball.

Now, Griner has her third gold medal playing for the U.S. and plans to place this one next to her newborn son, Bash.

“It was a long journey, a hard journey to get back into it,” the 33-year-old said. “I’m just happy that my body was able to hold up and be able to be here.”

Griner has learned to appreciate the little things at the Olympics more than she did the first two times she played in them, in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro and in 2021 in Tokyo. In 2021, Griner led the U.S. with 30 points, the most points ever scored by a U.S. player in a gold-medal game.

That was three years ago, but Griner’s ordeal in Russia left her appreciating the mundane details of each day.

“Waking up, going to practice, even when you don’t want to practice, having the opportunity to do that, because we overlook it,” she said. “That’s the opportunity that we get to do and I just cherish every second I can now.”

During these Games, the U.S. pulled off another high-profile prisoner exchange hours before Griner took the court during pool play. Knowing that more Americans were coming home had her “head over heels” happy at their return.

Teammate Diana Taurasi, who helped lobby for Griner’s return during her detention, stood two teammates away from Griner during the medal ceremony and anthem. Taurasi said she could sense Griner’s emotions and called it almost “mind-boggling” that Griner got back to this point.

“She’s a person that is grateful for all the support that she got through all this,” Taurasi said. “And it wasn’t easy. And it’s still not easy for her. She still carries a big burden … to make sure everyone gets out. She carries that burden really heavy on her back.”

During the game itself, Griner scored four quick points and finished with two rebounds in the win.

She celebrated the victory on the basketball court with lots of hugs, including from Lisa Leslie and others cheering on the Americans at Bercy Arena, essentially a road game for the U.S. with French President Emmanuel Macron in the stands.

“The gold (medal game) is just the icing on the cake, being in the Olympics … as well,” Griner said.

Then came time to celebrate again as the Americans huddled at midcourt for photos. Griner took out a phone for the team selfie with her right hand, using her left hand to hold up her latest gold medal.

This definitely was a moment to be remembered.

Novak Djokovic wins his 1st Olympic gold medal by beating Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s tennis final https://arizonasports.com/story/3553436/novak-djokovic-wins-his-1st-olympic-gold-medal-by-beating-carlos-alcaraz-in-the-mens-tennis-final/ https://arizonasports.com/story/3553436/novak-djokovic-wins-his-1st-olympic-gold-medal-by-beating-carlos-alcaraz-in-the-mens-tennis-final/#respond Sun, 04 Aug 2024 15:24:22 +0000 https://arizonasports.com/?p=3553436 PARIS (AP) — Novak Djokovic won his first Olympic gold medal by beating Carlos Alcaraz 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2) in an enthralling men’s tennis singles final Sunday, giving the 37-year-old from Serbia the last significant accomplishment missing from his glittering resume.

Djokovic’s impressive career already featured a men’s-record 24 Grand Slam titles and the most weeks spent at No. 1 in the rankings by any man or woman. It also already contained a Summer Olympics medal, from 2008, but it was a bronze — and he has made clear that simply was not sufficient.

Until he got past bronze medalist Lorenzo Musetti of Italy in the semifinals Friday, Djokovic was 0-3 in that round at the Games. He lost to the eventual gold winner each time: Rafael Nadal at Beijing in 2008, Andy Murray at London in 2012, and Alexander Zverev in Tokyo three years ago.

In Paris, wearing a gray sleeve over the right knee that required surgery for a torn meniscus two months ago, Djokovic faced Nadal in the second round and eliminated his longtime rival in straight sets. Now Djokovic is the oldest man to win the singles gold in his sport since 1908 — and prevented Spain’s Alcaraz, who is 21, from becoming the youngest.

When the victory was his, when the gold was his, thanks to one last forehand winner, Djokovic turned toward his team in the stands — sitting in front of his wife and their two children — and dropped his racket as he knelt on the clay. As emotional as ever, he cried and covered his face, then rose and grabbed a red-white-and-blue Serbian flag. After hugs in the stands, Djokovic waved that flag. Alcaraz wept afterward, too.

The final, which lasted 2 hours, 50 minutes despite being decided in only two sets, was a rematch of the Wimbledon title match three weeks ago that Alcaraz won to follow up his French Open title in June.

Alcaraz also defeated Djokovic in last year’s final at the All England Club, but Djokovic won when they met in the semifinals of the 2023 French Open, the annual clay-court tournament held at Roland Garros, the site used for tennis during these Olympics.

Sunday’s contest was an enthralling matchup, featuring one of the best to ever do it in Djokovic, and the best at the moment in Alcaraz. Indeed, could have been frustrating for Djokovic to find himself once again across the net from a younger, speedier version of himself. Maybe that’s why Djokovic frequently looked up and gesticulated and muttered toward his guest box.

Still, he came out on top.

It required long exchanges filled with superb ball-striking at the baseline, deft drop shots — Alcaraz’s tended to be more successful, sometimes so good Djokovic declined to even give chase — and tremendous sprinting, sliding, stretching defense at both ends. They served so well that neither got broken even once: Djokovic saved eight break points, Alcaraz six.

Most remarkable, perhaps, was how cleanly both men played, despite the talent of the opposition and pressure of the occasion. Unforced errors were rare.

The only shame, perhaps, for the fans — and, naturally, the loser — was that the Olympics uses a best-of-three-set format, instead of the best-of-five at Grand Slam tournaments. Make no mistake, this encounter between the No. 1-seeded Djokovic and No. 2-seeded Alcaraz was worthy of a major final, and no one fortunate enough to hold a ticket could complain about not getting their money’s worth.

Those in the stands became part of the show, repeatedly breaking out into choruses of “No-le! No-le!” or “Car-los! Car-los!” that often overlapped, creating an operatic fugue. In the second set, as Alcaraz attempted to mount a comeback, his supporters began chanting, “Si, se puede!” (essentially, “Yes, you can!”) while shaking their red-and-yellow flags. Chair umpire Damien Dumusois occasionally reminded folks to remain silent during the action.

Yet it also became as quiet as a theater between points, enough so that play was delayed briefly in the first set when the air thick with anticipation was pierced by a young child’s crying.

Both men played to the crowd. When Alcaraz raced to reach one drop shot and deposit it over the net for a winner, he basked in the raucous reaction by pointing his right index finger to his ear. When Djokovic laced a cross-court forehand winner on the run to cap a 10-shot point to lead 3-2 in the second tiebreaker, he waved both arms overhead to encourage folks who already were on their feet, screaming.

The first set alone lasted more than 1 1/2 hours, chock full of epic shots and epic games. One lasted 18 points spread over more than a dozen mesmerizing minutes, including five break chances for Alcaraz, before Djokovic managed to hold for a 5-4 lead. In the tiebreaker, Djokovic was superior in crunch time, as he so often is, taking the last four points.

At 3-all, Alcaraz delivered a body serve, but Djokovic slid just enough to his left to smack a cross-court forehand return winner. After two mistakes by Alcaraz, Djokovic produced a volley winner and turned to face his family with a fist held high.

Another Bob Bowman-coached swimmer wins gold, this time Hungarian Hubert Kós https://arizonasports.com/story/3553111/another-bob-bowman-coached-swimmer-wins-gold-this-time-hungarian-hubert-kos-2/ https://arizonasports.com/story/3553111/another-bob-bowman-coached-swimmer-wins-gold-this-time-hungarian-hubert-kos-2/#respond Fri, 02 Aug 2024 03:00:54 +0000 https://arizonasports.com/?p=3553111 NANTERRE, France (AP) — American coach Bob Bowman keeps cranking out Olympic gold-medal winners, swimmers trained in the United States but flying flags of other nations.

Frenchman Léon Marchand — home-country hero of the Paris Olympics — has already won three gold medals this week under Bowman’s tutelage. He’ll be the favorite for a fourth gold on Friday in the 200 individual medley.

And Michael Phelps, of course, was the first to make Bowman famous. He won 23 Olympic gold medals and reigns as a swimming legend.

Add Hungarian Hubert Kós to Bowman’s list.

Kós won the 200-meter backstroke on Thursday night in 1 minute 54.26 seconds, coming from more than a second behind over the final 50 meters to overtake silver medalist Apostolos Christou of Greece (1:54.82). Swiss Roman Mityukov took bronze (1:54.85).

So what is the Bowman magic?

“His magic touch is the work,” said Kós, who trained with Bowman at Arizona State University and has followed him to the University of Texas at Austin, where Bowman starts this season. Kos has two more years of eligibility at Texas.

“He doesn’t really let us be second best,” Kos said. “He doesn’t let us stoop down to a level that he doesn’t want from us.”

Arizona State won the NCAA swim championship powered by Marchand, Kós, and Canadian Olympic bronze medalist Ilya Kharun, who finished third behind Marchand in the 200 fly.

“I’m just happy to be a part of a team like that,” Kós said.

Kós is the son of a Hungarian mother and an Irish-Hungarian father. He went to an American school, speaks like an American, and when he wanted to step up to the next level he went to Bowman in the United States.

“I’m technically 75% Hungarian,” he laughed.

Kós said he tried to save a bit in the early part of the race so he could come back strong at the end.

“I just knew that I had to do something like that to win,” he said. “Doesn’t really matter how I got there. The point is that I got there and I’m just really happy.”

Asked to summarize his Olympics joy, Kós was direct.

“I was just happy to get my hand on the wall,” he said. “But I feel really sick right now.”

Simone Biles wins Olympic gold, Sunisa Lee wins bronze in women’s all-around gymnastics event https://arizonasports.com/story/3553043/simone-biles-wins-olympic-gold-sunisa-lee-wins-bronze-in-womens-all-around-gymnastics-event/ https://arizonasports.com/story/3553043/simone-biles-wins-olympic-gold-sunisa-lee-wins-bronze-in-womens-all-around-gymnastics-event/#respond Thu, 01 Aug 2024 19:04:18 +0000 https://arizonasports.com/?p=3553043 PARIS (AP) — Simone Biles remains peerless. Even when she’s not quite perfect.

The American gymnastics star edged Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade during a tense Olympic all-around final on Thursday. Biles’ total of 59.131 was just over a point ahead of Andrade at 57.932, one of the closest calls Biles has ever endured at a major international event.

Sunisa Lee, the Tokyo Olympics champion, earned bronze despite spending much of the last 15 months dealing with multiple kidney diseases that left her return to the Games very much in doubt.

Still, the meet ended the way all the ones Biles has started and finished over the last 11 years have ended: with hugs and gold on the way.

The margin was the smallest in a major international event since Biles captured the third of her record six world championships in 2015.

She was a teenager then. She’s an icon now.

The 27-year-old who is redefining what a gymnast can do — and just as notably, for how long she can do it — became the third woman to become a two-time Olympic champion, joining Larisa Latynina of the Soviet Union in 1956 and 1960 and Vera Caslavska of Czechoslovakia in 1964 and 1968.

Biles also is the oldest woman to claim the biggest title in her sport since then 30-year-old Maria Gorokhovskaya of the Soviet Union won the first-ever Olympic all-around in Melbourne in 1952.

Yet the sixth gold and ninth overall medal — the same as Romanian great Nadia Comaneci, who was among the star-studded crowd that included the U.S. men’s basketball team — of Biles’ unparalleled career did not come as easy as so many that came before.

She misjudged a transition on uneven bars, the weakest of her four events, letting go of the upper bar too soon and forcing her to reach for a larger-than-expect gap.

While she didn’t fall — Biles muscled her way back into the routine — it blunted her momentum and led to major deductions that left her trailing Andrade through two rotations.

The deficit didn’t last.

Biles responded with a largely wobble-free 14.566 on the balance beam, the highest of the night among the 24 finalists, while Andrade was forced to do a major balance check during her slightly easier set that dropped her down to second heading into floor exercise, Biles’ signature event.

Andrade, the silver medalist behind Lee in 2021, needed the best floor set of her life to catch Biles. It didn’t quite happen. Andrade stepped out of bounds at one point, a minor problem but enough to create plenty of wiggle room for the 25-year-old who has rarely needed it over the years.

Biles incorporated music from pop icons Taylor Swift and Beyonce into her current routine, a 75-second set that began with the opening bars of Swift’s hit “Ready For It” and featured the hardest tumbling ever done by a woman in the history of the sport.

When she was done — sealing gold that served as a redemption of sorts three years after pulling out of multiple finals in Tokyo to focus on her mental health — Biles sprinted to hug Lee just off the podium and blew kisses to the cameras that have become fixtures wherever she goes under the Olympic rings.

While there may be more medals on the way — Biles is in three event finals later in the Games — the all-around puts her into the conversation as perhaps the greatest American Olympian ever.

Biles is no longer the prodigy who triumphed in Rio de Janeiro eight years ago.

She’s married and a vocal advocate for survivors of sexual abuse and the importance of proper mental health. She openly volunteered after the Americans won gold in the team final on Tuesday that she met with her personal therapist that morning to help get her in the right mindset.

Biles relied on the internal work she’s done over the years after that rocky bars routine. She sat with her legs crossed on a chair in her blue sequined leotard and closed her eyes, immune to the cameras that followed her every move.

When she opened them, she was ready to move on.

It’s what she does. She has said repeatedly over the last three years that what happened in Tokyo is a part of her past, not a part of her present, and if critics have a problem with it, that’s their issue, not hers.

She’s moved on to bigger things. Like setting a standard that may never be reached.

In her sport. And maybe all others, too.

Homers by Carroll, Thomas lead D-backs to victory over Cubs https://arizonasports.com/story/3551480/homers-by-carroll-thomas-lead-d-backs-to-victory-over-cubs/ https://arizonasports.com/story/3551480/homers-by-carroll-thomas-lead-d-backs-to-victory-over-cubs/#respond Sun, 21 Jul 2024 02:27:40 +0000 https://arizonasports.com/?p=3551480 CHICAGO (AP) — Corbin Carroll hit a two-run homer and Alek Thomas had a solo shot in Arizona’s three-run fifth inning to help the Diamondbacks beat the Chicago Cubs 3-0 on Saturday night for their sixth win in seven games.

Zac Gallen gave up three hits in five scoreless innings, tying his career high with six walks, as defending National League champion Arizona moved three games over .500 for the first time this season. The D-backs have won 12 of their last 17.

The next three relievers — Kevin Ginkel, Justin Martinez and Ryan Thompson — each pitched a perfect inning, and Paul Sewald worked around Miles Mastrobuoni’s pinch-hit double in the ninth for his 15th save to complete the four-hitter.

Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks (2-8) allowed three runs and two hits, while walking three in five innings. The 34-year-old right-hander was cruising until the fifth when Carroll and Thomas went deep.

Miguel Amaya had two of Chicago’s hits, including an infield single lined off Gallen’s right foot in the second. After being checked by trainers, Gallen (7-5) continued until he reached 102 pitches in this fifth start after missing a month with a right hamstring strain.

An All-Star last season, Gallen issued six walks only once before, as a rookie on Aug. 19, 2019, against Colorado

Carroll’s homer was just his sixth of the season, but third in four games. The 2023 NL Rookie of the Year hit 25 last season and batted .285, but his average this season is .211

The left-handed hitting Thomas reached out and lined a high sinker to the basket in right to put Arizona on the board 1-0 in the fifth. After Hendricks issued a walk, Carroll mashed a center-cut changeup 418 feet to right center.

The Cubs loaded the bases on a double and two walks in the bottom half, but Gallen escaped when Michael Tauchman grounded out.

Arizona’s Jordan Montgomery — on the 15-day IL retroactive to June 29 (right knee inflammation) — threw a bullpen session on Saturday and “felt good,” manager Torey Lovullo said.

Arizona RHP Brandon Pfaadt (4-6, 3.97) faces Chicago LHP Shota Imanaga (8-2, 2.97) in the series finale on Sunday.

Hear the game on 98.7, ArizonaSports.com or the Arizona Sports app with first pitch at 11:20 a.m.

PHOENIX (AP) — Allisha Gray became the first player in WNBA history to win both the 3-point and skills competition in the same year, capturing both titles Friday night.

The Atlanta Dream guard topped Jonquel Jones 22-21 in the 3-point shootout finals after edging Sophie Cunningham in the skills competition by just over 2 seconds.

Jones was looking to become the first post-player to win the 3-point contest. She also made the finals in 2021 before losing to four-time champion Allie Quigley. Jones had a chance to win the contest, but her last shot — the two-point money ball — fell short.

She scored 25 points in the opening round — tops amongst the five competitors. Gray had 23 points.

Neither defending champion Sabrina Ionescu or sensational rookie Caitlin Clark competed in the 3-point contest this year. Ionescu is playing for the U.S. at the Olympics and is focused on getting ready for the Paris Games.

After virtually playing non-stop for nine months between college and the WNBA, Clark just wanted to take some time to relax.

“I think the biggest thing was for me, it’s just like I need a break,” she said. “I’m going to take some time for myself to enjoy what I want to do, and at times that can be in the tough position I’m in, but I think it was the healthiest for myself.”

Brittney Griner was the only member of the U.S. Olympic Team who participated in either competition. She finished the obstacle course in 46.3 seconds.

There was also a 3-on-3 exhibition game between the U.S. team headed to the Paris Olympics and an under-23 team featuring top college players.

The Olympic team won the tight contest 19-16 as Rhyne Howard scored the final eight points for the victors, hitting four 2-point shots. She finished the game scoring 12 of the team’s 19 points.

The game is played with one and two-point baskets for 10 minutes or until a team scores 21 points.

Marina Mabrey, who was traded from Chicago to Connecticut on Wednesday wore a Sun jersey for the first time. She and Gray participated in both the skills competition and 3-point shootout. Mabrey just missed making the finals of the skills contest.

Gray received $2,575 from the league for each victory, per the Collective Bargaining Agreement, but also got $110,000 from Aflac as part of a partnership between with the WNBPA.

PHOENIX (AP) — Allisha Gray won the WNBA All-Star skills competition, beating hometown favorite Sophie Cunningham in the finals Friday night.

The Atlanta Dream star had the fastest time in the preliminary round and then was just a second slower in the final round. She edged out Cunningham on the obstacle course that combines passing, dribbling and shooting finishing it in 32.1 seconds.

Both Gray and Cunningham struggled in the finals from the 3-point line, but the Dream guard was able to use her speed to top the Mercury star’s time of 34.2.

“It’s definitely fun,” Gray said. “Being here is a breath of fresh air. You’re still locked in, but it’s more like a fun atmosphere.”

Indiana’s Kelsey Mitchell was a last-minute replacement for her Fever teammate Erica Wheeler. Wheeler wasn’t able to get to Phoenix because of the faulty software update that caused technological havoc worldwide on Friday and delayed flights.

The Fever guard was flying from Atlanta to Phoenix but her flight was first delayed and then canceled. She said in a tweet that Pacers CEO Mel Raines tried to get her a charter flight to the All-Star festivities, but nothing was available on short notice.

Mitchell, who was wearing Wheeler’s jersey, didn’t qualify for the finals.

“I’m excited about it,” Mitchell said in the video. “I don’t know how I’ll do compared to Erica, but for her, I’ll make sure I hold it down, keep the Fever organization going in trying to win this thing, and have fun with it.”

Cunningham’s teammate Brittney Griner was also in the event, representing the post players. She went first and finished the course in 46.3 seconds.

Marina Mabrey, who was traded from Chicago to Connecticut on Wednesday, wore a Sun jersey for the first time. Mabrey and Gray were the only players to participate in both the skills competition and 3-point shootout. Mabrey just missed making the finals of the skills contest.

Gray receives $2,575 from the league, per the Collective Bargaining Agreement, but will also get $55,000 from Aflac as part of a partnership between with the WNBPA.

Gray initially said she might use the $55,000 to start a new business, but had a change of heart now that the money is in hand.

“Now that I think about it, had a good nap, maybe I’ll go on a little golfing spree, shopping spree,” Gray said, grinning.

Phoenix Mercury unveil new practice facility as part of WNBA All-Star festivities https://arizonasports.com/story/3551304/phoenix-mercury-unveil-new-practice-facility-as-part-of-wnba-all-star-festivities-2/ https://arizonasports.com/story/3551304/phoenix-mercury-unveil-new-practice-facility-as-part-of-wnba-all-star-festivities-2/#respond Fri, 19 Jul 2024 03:21:39 +0000 https://arizonasports.com/?p=3551304 PHOENIX (AP) — The Phoenix Mercury unveiled their new state-of-the-art practice facility as part of All-Star weekend.

The 58,000-square-foot performance center was designed specifically for the WNBA team.

“I wanted to make the best facility out there,” Phoenix Mercury owner Mat Ishbia said. “We think we did that. The overall infrastructure, the parking. Everything you’d think of a superior athlete would need, we tried to build that in the women’s practice facility.”

The facility, which the Mercury said cost $100 million and is three blocks from the team’s arena, will including strength and cardio areas, hydrotherapy, a sauna, offices, meeting rooms, lounge and dining room, among other amenities. It will also have a full kitchen with a dedicated chef.

“We looked at all sports, all over the world, how do you make this the best of the best?” chief executive officer of the Mercury and Suns Josh Bartelstein said. “None of it happened by accident.”

Ishbia hopes that the new facility will not benefit his team, but will also raise the league.

“We definitely want players to come to Phoenix, but other WNBA teams are also going to elevate their game as well,” he said in a phone interview. “I hope everyone sees it and goes how do we invest and do it right for the women. Any business you have to invest in it to grow. This is our point in investing and see it grow and succeed on and off the court.”

The U.S. Olympic team was the first team to train at the new facility. The Mercury became the third WNBA team in the past few years to debut a new practice facility as Phoenix joined Seattle and Las Vegas.

One of the highlights of the facility was naming the two practice courts after Diana Taurasi, who has spent her entire 20-year career with the Mercury.

“It’s really humbling. It really is,” Taurasi said.

The courts will have her name and a logo inspired by the WNBA’s all-time scoring leader.

“It’s a nod to our legendary player,” Ishbia said. “She won three WNBA championships here. She’s over 40 and still playing at high level.”

Taurasi will be taking part in All-Star weekend in Phoenix. The Mercury have made sure to take care of all the little details to ensure players and fans have an incredible experience at the event.

“From concierge service to gifts in your room and personalized activities for the players,” Bartelstein said. “We have a massive team working on it, it was a full-time job for many.”

Fans in attendance will receive a branded WNBA All-Star rally towel at Friday night’s 3-point contest and skills challenge and on Saturday a T-shirt for the All-Star Game. Pitbull will perform at halftime of the All-Star contest.

“Everyone’s coming to Phoenix and it’s the epicenter of basketball,” Ishbia said. “We want this to feel more like an NBA All-Star Game.”

Argentina wins record 16th Copa America title, beats Colombia after Messi gets hurt https://arizonasports.com/story/3550981/argentina-wins-record-16th-copa-america-title-beats-colombia-after-messi-gets-hurt/ https://arizonasports.com/story/3550981/argentina-wins-record-16th-copa-america-title-beats-colombia-after-messi-gets-hurt/#respond Mon, 15 Jul 2024 04:40:53 +0000 https://arizonasports.com/?p=3550981 MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Argentina won its second straight Copa America championship, overcoming Lionel Messi’s second-half leg injury to beat Colombia 1-0 Sunday night on Lautaro Martínez’s 112th-minute goal.

Messi appeared to sustain a non-contact injury while running and falling in the 64th minute and covered his face with his hands as he sat on the bench and sobbed.

Martínez later ran to that bench to hug his captain after the goal that propelled Argentina to its record 16th Copa title.

In a match that started 1 hour, 22 minutes late because of crowd trouble at Hard Rock Stadium, Argentina won its third straight major title following the 2021 Copa America and 2022 World Cup and matched Spain, which won the 2008 and 2012 European Championships around the 2010 World Cup.

Argentina also stopped Colombia’s 28-game unbeaten streak dating to a February 2022 loss to the Albiceleste.

Martínez entered in the 97th minute and scored from Giovani Lo Celso’s perfect through pass. Just inside the penalty area, Martínez sent a right-foot shot through the upraised arms of sliding goalkeeper Camilo Vargas for his 29th international goal, his tournament-high fifth.

Making his 39th and possibly last Copa America appearance at age 37, Messi had one goal in the tournament. He went down after an ankle was stepped on in the first half but remained in the game.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner looked to the bench as soon as he fell to the field in the second half, appearing to know his tournament was over. He took off his right boot as he walked off and slammed it frustration, and his ankle appeared to swell.

The start was delayed from 8 p.m. EDT to 9:22 p.m. because of crowd control issues outside the stadium, including troves of fans breaching security gates at a venue to be used for the 2026 World Cup.

Days after Uruguay players were involved in a brawl with Colombia fans following their semifinal match in Charlotte, North Carolina, video showed fans climbing fences and railings to get inside the championship match, with officials unable to keep track of who had purchased tickets and who didn’t.

Colombia was more aggressive and forced goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez to make four saves in the first half, but Argentina began to threaten more in the second.

Nicolás Tagliafico thought he scored in the 75th minute but was ruled offside. Nicolás González, who replaced Messi. was stopped by Vargas in the 95th minute.

Numerous players lost their footing during the second half of Sunday’s match. The grass was heavily watered with sprinklers following the halftime performance by Colombian pop star Shakira, which caused an extended halftime break.

Spain beats England to win record 4th European Championship title https://arizonasports.com/story/3550927/spain-beats-england-to-win-record-4th-european-championship-title/ https://arizonasports.com/story/3550927/spain-beats-england-to-win-record-4th-european-championship-title/#respond Sun, 14 Jul 2024 21:40:28 +0000 https://arizonasports.com/?p=3550927 BERLIN (AP) — Spain is the king of European soccer for a record fourth time. For England, it’s another agonizing near-miss in the team’s decades-long tale of underachievement.

Completing a tournament the team dominated from start to finish, Spain beat England 2-1 in the European Championship final on Sunday with Mikel Oyarzabal the unlikely match-winner in the 86th minute.

Oyarzabal, a backup striker who came on as a substitute for captain Alvaro Morata, slid in to poke home a left-wing cross by Marc Cucurella, just when the game at Berlin’s Olympiastadion seemed destined for extra time.

England, the birthplace of soccer, is still without a major title in the men’s game since winning the 1966 World Cup and its players watched on forlornly as Morata raised aloft the silver trophy to backdrop of confetti and fireworks inside the stadium built for the 1936 Olympics.

Add 2024 to the titles won by Spain in 1964, 2008 and 2012.

“Here we are, champions of Europe,” said Nico Williams, whose opening goal for Spain in the 47th minute was canceled out by England substitute Cole Palmer in the 73rd. “We are thrilled and hope this can keep going and we can go for the (2026) World Cup.”

Lamine Yamal, the prodigy who turned 17 on Saturday and is the youngest player to have appeared at a European Championship, set up Williams’ goal with an inside run before passing across the face of the area. The two wingers have become the poster boys of an exciting, multicultural team that reflects Spain’s changing demographics.

Yamal’s mother is from Equatorial Guinea and his father is from Morocco, while the 22-year-old Williams has Ghanaian parents who made the long journey to Europe looking for a better life. To make it to Spain, they had to ride on the back of a crowded truck and walk barefoot through the Sahara desert.

“I believe there is a historical change, we are really grateful,” said Williams, the player of the match with his darting runs and his second goal of Euro 2024.

“My parents have suffered a lot to get here. They are the ones who have suffered the most and they have instilled this sort of respect and loyalty in me,” he said. “I’m really happy because we are making history.”

Unlike his brother Inaki, who is a Ghana international, Nico chose to play for Spain and will now be regarded as a national hero there.

Spain is back as a major player in senior soccer after winning both the Women’s World Cup — also against England — and the men’s UEFA Nations League in 2023.

Since 2001, Spanish men’s teams have won 23 consecutive major finals in club and international soccer.

“I said before the tournament, nobody can hang with us,” Williams said.

Spain won all seven games at this European Championship — an unprecedented feat — and broke the record for goals scored in a single tournament, with 15.

There were joyous scenes after the final whistle, with defender Dani Carvajal piled on by jubilant teammates after slumping to the ground. Spain coach Luis de la Fuente was thrown into the air by his players. Both Cucurella and Yamal led Spain’s players in jumping over the advertising boards to reach the red-and-yellow-clad Spanish fans in the stadium’s east end.

“This is the best (birthday) gift I could have asked for,” Yamal said. “It is a dream come true.”

After getting his medal, the teenager turned and shook his fist in celebration, stuck his tongue out and showed off a beaming grin. By then, Yamal and his team mates were wearing Spain jerseys with “Kings of Europe” and the number “4” on the back.

Meanwhile, fans who had watched the game on a big screen in Madrid celebrated wildly, chanting “champions, champions” in Spanish. It was a great sporting day for the nation, with Carlos Alcaraz winning the Wimbledon men’s singles title for a second straight year hours before the Euro 2024 final.

As for England, the men’s team has now lost back-to-back Euro finals — it was defeated in a penalty shootout by Italy on home soil in the final in 2021 — and this was another painful loss for a team that will have gone six decades without a major title by the next World Cup.

England’s women have been more successful, though, winning the European Championship in 2021 and reaching the World Cup final two years later.

“This time it just wasn’t meant to be,” Prince William, who attended the final alongside other dignitaries including Spain’s King Felipe, wrote on social media. “We’re all still so proud of you.”

It was the fourth straight game that the English came from behind since the group stage, but their resilience wasn’t rewarded this time.

A team that has produced big moments when it really mattered at Euro 2024 — including Jude Bellingham’s 95th-minute overhead kick against Slovakia in the round of 16 — couldn’t deliver another one, with Spain midfielder Dani Olmo clearing the ball off the line at a corner in the 89th minute.

“It has been a difficult ride, we have done extremely well to get here, but ultimately we are going to be judged on this game,” England captain Harry Kane said.

“It’s extremely painful,” he added. “It’s going to hurt for a long, long time.”

England coach Gareth Southgate, who has been in charge for eight years and also led the team to the World Cup semifinals in 2018, said it wasn’t the time to make a decision on his future. His contract expires in December.

“Most of this squad are going to be around not just for the World Cup but the next Euros as well,” Southgate said. “There’s a lot to look forward to but at this moment that’s not any consolation.”

Dearica Hamby hit a step-back 3-pointer that made it 70-67 with 5:39 to play and gave the Sparks their first lead since 10-9. Brittney Griner answered with two free throws before Copper added a driving layup.

The teams traded leads until Griner drew a double team on the block and kicked it out to Mikiah Herbert Harrigan — who made her first career start — for a wide-open 3-pointer gave Phoenix a 78-76 lead with 1:10 remaining.

Rickea Jackson’s putback made it 78-apiece with 41.1 seconds to go.

Cloud knifed into the lane and made a finger roll about 7 seconds later and, after McDonald missed from 3-point range, Cloud grabbed her career-best ninth rebound and was fouled. She hit both free throws to make it 82-78 with 23 seconds left.

Copper capped the scoring when she hit two free throws with 13 second remaining.

Phoenix (11-10) won back-to-back road games for the first time this season.

Hamby scored 25 points on 10-of-19 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds and Rickea Jackson added a career-high 22 points for Los Angeles (5-16). Stevens made her season debut after missing 20 games due to an arm injury she suffered while playing overseas in China during the offseason and finished with 10 points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block.

Diana Taurasi (leg) did not play.
